7 Minutes In Heaven: I'm Me...

With so many head of the class wedding filmmakers out there creating such outstanding work…using top notch equipment (every month something new to be bought) it’s been quite difficult even attempting to keep up. It’s exhausting, to say the least!
Since launching Fiore Films at the end of 2008, I found myself pretty much lost in the mix. My first concept piece…”Trash the Dress”… was pretty much a Josh Smith copycat piece…but not even close. Lucky for me, I was soon introduced to WedFACT (Thank you Steve Z.!) and became exposed to a whole new world…an entire community of masterful minds. Suddenly I found myself even more overwhelmed and especially confused! My second concept piece came shortly after that…”Shoot The Bride”…Holy wanna-be StillMotion…What a disaster!
There is constantly so much talk about “inspiration” and “inspiration this” and “inspiration that”. This is what brings me to writing my thoughts. Please excuse the run on sentences and the cursing. However, a little birdie suggested I simply go for it since hey…I’m me! But I digress…
Eventually came a most momentous piece for me…”Quite The Romantics”. Ahhhh….What a piece of shit production! I’m talking shitty lighting, shitty technique, shitty location, and most of all…shitty equipment! It’s alarming that I even had the balls to post that thing…on WedFact no less! What in the world was I thinking?!!!!
I’ll tell you exactly what I was thinking. I was genuinely looking for some feedback, some hard ass criticism, and maybe a little love. Thankfully and humbly, I did get some of each. However, I just want to share with you a delicious taste of some blog goodness:
Confused a bit? So was I!!! Even more, I was stunned when it made the top ten list of WedFACT’s last contest. Whhhhhhhhhhhat the…!!!!!??? I mean… REALLY?!Greg Lassik said...
sigur ros...great song choice. ...it was captivating. the contrast was what made it so beautiful, aside from the shooting of course. great job on this one!!

Hold on to your seats…Wait for it….I shot that with nothing but a Sony handy cam and broke down monopod! That’s it!!!!! Can you believe it? Sure you can…That thing looked horrendous! So why the rave reviews?
I have my own little theory… just a theory. I think because it was a romantic concept…I think because it was sexy and fresh…I think because the music was hot…I think because ultimately, there was so much love and passion that went into that piece. Altogether, it captivated some of the most talented cinematographers that I could NEVER EVER imagine living up to.
What’s my point? Simple. I was enlightened. It took a while, but I finally figured out how important it was for me to find “inspiration” from others, yet stay true to…well…me.
So now especially when I kick back and enjoy brilliant films created by the likes of… well you know who all you ingenious homies are…using all your high end lenses, gadgets, and cranes and shit…and just do everything to absolute perfection…I recall a humble piece called “Quite The Romanics”. Yup…I shot that with a little Sony handy cam and an ol' borrowed broke down monopod. Guess what? I'm feelin' goooooooood. I’m feeling proud of my work. Sure, I have much to learn and far much more room to grow...That's needless to say. Nonetheless, I have come to embrace my own style. I think it’s…well…me… And I llllllllike it!
